Overdue update - 2 - information for week ending 18th April

1. Our U14 boys, took part in the Feile competition, on Saturday last which was hosted by Williamstown. We won 2 games but lost to St.Gabriels in the final game, 2-8 to 1-5. A special thanks to all parents who supported the panel and to Williamstown for their hospitality.
2. Congratulations to Cathal Hynes who won the  Galway Feile skills competition in Tuam on Sunday. Well done Cathal.
3. Our Junior team played what could certainly be described as a game of two halves on Friday evening last against Tuam Stars in the 3rd round of the junior B league. Tuam led 0-9 to 0-3 at half time with Glenamaddy struggling in many areas of the field. However our team produced a brilliant 2nd half to be worthy winners at the end with the final score 1-13 to 0-13.                  Team : Martin Donnegan, Patrick Conneally, Aidan Potter, Luke Conneally, Anthony Comer, Sean Conneally 0-2, Noel Fahy, Michael Geraghty 1-1, Stephen Joyce 0-1, Eamonn Gannon, Keith Davis 0-5, Robert Molloy, Cillian Raftery, Martin Conneally 0-3, Damien Potter 0-1.     Subs used:  Fionan Keady, Niall Miskell and Michael Gibbons. 4. Our Intermediate team had a hard earned victory when they beat Menlough on Sunday afternoon with the game finishing on a final score of 0-11 to 0-9. This was a tough game with all players giving of their all and their mentors can feel proud of the team spirit that was shown throughout the 70 minutes. The supporters  were kept on a knife edge and could not relax till the sound of the final whistle. Overdue update -1 - information for week-ending 11th April

Due to a combination of visiting family and man flu (Oh and the volcanic ash issue - everybody else uses that as an excuse!!) updates have been lacking over the last few days, so forgive the tardiness of the following information.

1. Congratulations to our U14 boys who had a good victory over Kilkerrin/Clonbern in the U14 league on April 8th at Glenamaddy. This was a game that Glenamaddy took control of from the start and continued to dominate throughout. Some great scoring opportunities were capitalised on from the boot of Cathal Hynes who had a  final score tally of 2-7 at the end of the game.  Well done to all concerned.  Team : Cormac Haslam, Seamus Comer, James Burke, James Dillon, Zac Conneally, Colum Fallon, Mark Dolan, Peter Thomas Keaveney (capt) 1-0, Michael Geary 0-3, Stephen Glynn, Liam Glynn 0-1, Michael Conneally, Stephen Fox 1-1, Cathal Hynes 2-7, Eddie Walsh 1-1. 2. Na Gleannta minor team had a hard fought victory over Headford in the 3rd of the league. This was a game that kept supporters on their toes till the final whistle, with  Na Gleannta worth winners by the narrowest of margins. Final score Na Gleannta  1-14 Headford 3-7.
3. Our Intermediate team were beaten by Corofin senior team in the 2nd round of the Sweeney Oil competition. We play Menlough on Sunday next @3pm in the 2nd round of the league. This is a home game your support would be welcome.
4. Well done to the community games indoor soccer team who won the Connacht U14 title. Congratulations to all concerned.

Corofin 4 - 11 Glenamaddy 1 - 5

Both the weather and Corofin comprehensively outshone Glenamaddy this afternoon at the Belclare GAA ground in this Sweeney Oil League Group 3 clash.  In spite of the fine weather Glenamaddy were frustrated at a much delayed start after a late change of venue, but were however able to snatch the lead early on before relinquishing almost total control to a clever Corofin side who played out the first half almost entirely in the Glenamaddy half taking the half-time whistle holding an easy 0 - 1 to 3 - 7 advantage.

 

Facing a seemingly insurmountable hurdle Glenamaddy took to the field for the second half, on this hottest day of the year, with a positive attitude.  Although soon falling a further two points behind, a couple of tactical changes and player substitutions saw Glenamaddy begin to claw their way back.

They enjoyed a 'purple patch' scoring a goal and a further three points unanswered before Corofin again regained their composure and saw out the rest of the game with no real further threat to their dominance from a tiring Glenamaddy side.

Although the final result was never in doubt and Corofin were worthy and deserved winners how different might the result have been if the Glenamaddy side had not had such a huge first half deficit to over come?  After all the second half scoreline was Corofin 1 - 4 to Glenamaddy  1 - 4 !!

Na Gleannta 1 - 14 Headford 3 - 7

Having missed the first half due to a combination of losing my glasses and some confusion over the starting time it was a pleasure to arrive with the second half about to start and the scoreline reading Na Gleannta 0 - 9  to Headford's 1 - 2.

Apparently the start time had been changed by 30 minutes to allow for a quick getaway to watch the Man Utd v. Bayern Munich game.  But if it was excitement, tension and 'edge-of-the-seat' sport you were after, forget Man Utd, you couldn't have beaten last night's second half for the best sports viewing of the evening!

Plotting Headford's downfall ?

A nail-biting second half saw Na Gleannta slowly lose their advantage, and at one point Headford had established a 3 point lead and things were beginning to look ominous for the Glenamaddy/Glinsk lads.

Tension was high as the two teams exchanged scores in a riveting half and the lead changed repeatedly as the game wore on.  The Na Gleannta supporters were chewing their nails to the quick as the final whistle drew near and this tension spilled over on to the pitch as players from both sides realised this was a game that was going to be decided by the closest of margins.

Na Gleannta, though, stuck to the task, and showing great self control kept themselves in touch and with only a few seconds left the scores were equal.

With the last kick of the game Na Gleannta were able to secure a first rate victory that brought smiles and relief all round the Glenamaddy ground.  If Alex Ferguson was looking for superlatives he could have done no better than to have seen the Na Gleannta side last night.  Through tenacity, doggedness, determination and a desire to win and not give up until the final whistle was blown they pulled off a famous victory.  All credit to them and the management team - well done lads!

Glenamaddy 0 - 11 Caherlistrane 0 - 9

Well done to our Intermediate team who had a good victory over Caherlistrane in the 1st round of the Sweeney Oil Group C on Friday evening last.  Glenamaddy led 0-7 to 0-2 at half time and the game finished on a score line of 0-11 to Glenamaddy, 0-9 to Caherlistrane. This was a very good overall team performance and definitely marks a positive start for the management team and their panel of players. Well done to all concerned. Our next outing should be away to Corofin - in the Sweeney Oil Group C - this Saturday (k.o. 17:00) Referee G. Daly

Na Gleannta v Cortoon Shamrocks 28th March

Na Gleannta were outclassed in every department this morning at the Glenamaddy ground.  

They started brightly but quickly became frayed as they succumbed to a 3 point deficit. Goalmouth action was almost non existent as the Cortoon defence and keeper were barely tested during the first half.

Na Gleannta fought tigerishly but some wayward kicking out of hand too frequently handed possession back to Cortoon, and the scoreboard showed a not insurmountable position for Na Gleannta if they could make their trademark second half assault on the opposition.

The second half saw Na Gleannta open much more purposefully and soon they had cut the arrears to just 3 points as they played with much greater fluency and determination.  Unfortunately the improvement was not to last and some slick plays by Cortoon soon saw them dominating the game with Na Gleannta missing a hatful of chances to trim the deficit both from frees and from open play.

Although Na Gleannta probably had the lion's share of possession and territory in the second half they too often handed that hard won possession to Cortoon and were consequently unable to turn their hard work into points.

Glenamaddy Junior 1 - 6; Oranmore Maree 2 - 8

Glenamaddy face Oranmore-Maree on a fine afternoon at the Glenamaddy ground.

Both the weather and Oranmore outshone Glenamaddy this afternoon.  Glenamadddy opened the scoring early on, but a more efficient Oranmore side soon responded with four points on the board.  Glenamaddy seemed to be relying on speculative kicks and wasted a lot of possession through poor passing.  Oranmore used space much more wisely and their running off the ball saw them begin to dominate the game.  Glenamaddy were however able to just about keep in touch and after some determined goal mouth skirmishes turned aropund still in touch, just 3 points in arrears.

The second half saw an unlikely comeback by Glenamaddy who clawed their way into a 1 - 5 to 0 - 6 lead at one point.  A scrappy game saw Oranmore put the ball in the net twice and score a further two points with Glenamaddy being only able to add a further point before the final whistle sounded their death knell with Oranmore eventually running out deserved winners; Glenamaddy 1 - 6, Oranmore 2 - 8.

Na Gleannta Minors v. Caherlistrane - result

Last Saturday afternoon saw Na Gleannta minor team play their first competitive game in the North B Minor League against Caherlistrane. Na Gleannta's first score came from the boot of Cillian Raftery who went on to a final tally of 2-4.

Na Gleannta at times appeared a little sluggish but as the game progressed the team began to show their true colours.  Patrick and Luke Conneally gave fine individual displays in mid field with Cian Connolly, Anthony Comer and Edward Cuddy  forming a secure defence line. Dean O’ Rourke and Michael Fox  worked hard up front. 

The game ended with Na Gleannta comfortable winners - the score being Na Gleannta 2-10
Caherlistrane 1-5.

Glenamaddy Intermediates overcome Ballinasloe

Scoring an early goal Ballinasloe always looked to be a hard outfit to beat. The Ballinasloe boys always semed to have more time on the ball and at times played some skilfull fluent football; Glenamaddy were, however, not going to be lightly beaten and after some exciting goalmouth action at each end the sides closed the first half with Glenamaddy just one point adrift at 0 - 6 to 1 - 4.

The second half continued in the same vein with Glenamaddy now freely scoring points.  Ballinasloe though scored another goal to keep themselves ahead in this end-to-end battle.  This goal, though, only served to galvanise Glenamaddy and thereafter they rattled in a further nine points to only a two points response from Ballinasloe.  Glenamaddy, finally closing the victory in an exciting fast moving game by a comfortable margin of 5 points, were good value for their win.

A challenge game has been arranged between Glenamaddy Intermediates and Ballinasloe for Saturday 13th March @ 6.00pm. 

The game will be played at the Glenamaddy ground, and the referee will be Gerry Daly.

Na Gleannta v. Oranmore - March 6th

In the shadow of Dunmore Castle Na Gleannta were ultimately unable to withstand the onslaught of a powerful Oranmore side in this U21 North B Championship match.

Starting off brightly with 2 points quickly on the board na Gleannta weathered a sustained period of pressure from Oranmore.  Spending long periods in their own half Na Gleannta managed to break away to put a further point on the board.  Some good goalkeeping and the inability of Oranmore to covert pressure into points led a good sized crowd to think this could be Na Gleannta's day.

Deep into the first half though Oranmore finally broke through and were soon ahead 0 - 3 to 1 - 3 in spite of some impassioned Na Gleannta defending. The Glenamaddy/Glinsk lads were not going to lie down though and at the break the scores were Na Gleannta 1 - 3  Oranmore 1 - 5.

 

With all to play for coming out after the break, and a palpable air of expectation from the crowd the Na Gleannta bubble was soon burst as Oranmore immediately put another point on the board taking them now 3 points clear.  Oranmore continued to pile on the pressure and in spite of some spirited attacking from Na Gleannta with points being scored tit for tat Oranmore just pulled  away in the last few minutes to win by 4 points. Na Gleannta aquitted themselves well and for a team so recently formed have quickly jelled into a promising football side.  The game against a tough Oranmore side probably came a little too soon in their development. There were though a lot of positives in their performance this afternoon.  Heads didn't drop and a lot of determination and resilience were shown by everybody concerned.  Great effort lads!!

Na Gleannta U21 - 2nd Round, North U-21 B Championship

Na Gleannta are to play Oranmore in the next round of the North B Championship following their brilliant victory over Athenry.

The game will take place at Menlough on Saturday March 6th at 16:00.  Referee will be S Lawlor.

Glenamaddy Intermediates v. Williamstown - 27th February

A fast moving game saw Glenamaddy emerge winners by a single point in the local derby against Williamstown under lights at the Glenamaddy ground last evening.

Williamstown were unable to translate possession and territory into a win as they piled on the points in the second half as Glenamaddy seemed to lose their way.  Williamstown playing smooth slick football moved from a point down at halftime to six ahead at one point.  Glenamaddy seemed to have lost their sharpness and were in danger of being overawed by a fast moving, skilful Williamstown outfit.

 














Glenamaddy though eventually 'found their mojo' and playing with much greater purpose as the second half progressed began to claw their way back.  A dogged and increasingly confident last 15 minutes or so saw them leave the field with smiles all round as they secured a single point victory.
