Glenamaddy Intermediates overcome Ballinasloe

Scoring an early goal Ballinasloe always looked to be a hard outfit to beat. The Ballinasloe boys always semed to have more time on the ball and at times played some skilfull fluent football; Glenamaddy were, however, not going to be lightly beaten and after some exciting goalmouth action at each end the sides closed the first half with Glenamaddy just one point adrift at 0 - 6 to 1 - 4.

The second half continued in the same vein with Glenamaddy now freely scoring points.  Ballinasloe though scored another goal to keep themselves ahead in this end-to-end battle.  This goal, though, only served to galvanise Glenamaddy and thereafter they rattled in a further nine points to only a two points response from Ballinasloe.  Glenamaddy, finally closing the victory in an exciting fast moving game by a comfortable margin of 5 points, were good value for their win.

Glenamaddy Intermediates v. Ballinasloe - 13th March

A challenge game has been arranged between Glenamaddy Intermediates and Ballinasloe for Saturday 13th March @ 6.00pm. 

The game will be played at the Glenamaddy ground, and the referee will be Gerry Daly.

Na Gleannta v. Oranmore - March 6th

In the shadow of Dunmore Castle Na Gleannta were ultimately unable to withstand the onslaught of a powerful Oranmore side in this U21 North B Championship match.

Starting off brightly with 2 points quickly on the board na Gleannta weathered a sustained period of pressure from Oranmore.  Spending long periods in their own half Na Gleannta managed to break away to put a further point on the board.  Some good goalkeeping and the inability of Oranmore to covert pressure into points led a good sized crowd to think this could be Na Gleannta's day.

Deep into the first half though Oranmore finally broke through and were soon ahead 0 - 3 to 1 - 3 in spite of some impassioned Na Gleannta defending. The Glenamaddy/Glinsk lads were not going to lie down though and at the break the scores were Na Gleannta 1 - 3  Oranmore 1 - 5.

 

With all to play for coming out after the break, and a palpable air of expectation from the crowd the Na Gleannta bubble was soon burst as Oranmore immediately put another point on the board taking them now 3 points clear.  Oranmore continued to pile on the pressure and in spite of some spirited attacking from Na Gleannta with points being scored tit for tat Oranmore just pulled  away in the last few minutes to win by 4 points. Na Gleannta aquitted themselves well and for a team so recently formed have quickly jelled into a promising football side.  The game against a tough Oranmore side probably came a little too soon in their development. There were though a lot of positives in their performance this afternoon.  Heads didn't drop and a lot of determination and resilience were shown by everybody concerned.  Great effort lads!!

Na Gleannta v. Oranmore due to be played at Menlough at 16:00 Saturday 6th March, will now be played at Dunmore at 15:30.

Na Gleannta U21 - 2nd Round, North U-21 B Championship

Na Gleannta are to play Oranmore in the next round of the North B Championship following their brilliant victory over Athenry.

The game will take place at Menlough on Saturday March 6th at 16:00.  Referee will be S Lawlor.

Glenamaddy Intermediates v. Williamstown - 27th February

Glenamaddy   2 - 8          Williamstown   1 - 10

A fast moving game saw Glenamaddy emerge winners by a single point in the local derby against Williamstown under lights at the Glenamaddy ground last evening.

Williamstown were unable to translate possession and territory into a win as they piled on the points in the second half as Glenamaddy seemed to lose their way.  Williamstown playing smooth slick football moved from a point down at halftime to six ahead at one point.  Glenamaddy seemed to have lost their sharpness and were in danger of being overawed by a fast moving, skilful Williamstown outfit.

 














Glenamaddy though eventually 'found their mojo' and playing with much greater purpose as the second half progressed began to claw their way back.  A dogged and increasingly confident last 15 minutes or so saw them leave the field with smiles all round as they secured a single point victory.

Na Gleannta v Athenry

Looking smart in new strip before the Athenry fixture

This afternoon saw Na Gleannta's first official fixture against Athenry at the Mountbellew ground. The newly formed team from Glinsk and Glenamaddy did their respective towns and themselves credit as they emerged from an exiting, tense encounter worthy winners with the final score at Na Gleannta 1 - 12,  Athenry 0 - 8.

Na Gleannta certainly upped their game after lapses in concentration, and occasionally lack of awareness in recent fixtures.  It was easy to forget that this afternoon was only their 5th game playing together - and they certainly played together today.  

Athenry took an early lead, but Na Gleannta showed great spirit to come straight back with 5 unanswered points  before giving their travelling supporters some concerns as they began to show worrying signs of letting things slip again.  Athenry began to claw their way back, and at half time the score stood at Na Gleannta 0 - 6 Athenry 0 - 5.

As the teams took the field for the second half it was anybody's game for the taking and things began to swing Athenry's way as they determinedly took the game to Na Gleannta and soon the scores stood equal at 7 points apiece.

The Na Gleannta team though showed great resolution and stuck doggedly to the task showing new found determination.  Na Gleannta began to pull away, although the result was still in the balance as the scores stood at Na Gleannta 0 - 10  Athenry 0 - 8. 

With a tense last 10 minutes in prospect the game finally turned Na Gleannta's way as "man-of-the-match" Keith Davis scored the goal that enabled his team to make the game theirs.  Na Gleannta adding two more points before the final whistle saw them run out comfortable winners in the end.

After the game the lads were hosted to refreshments at Mannion's Lounge when surely the smiles of victory continued.  Many thanks to Mannion's for their generosity.

North U-21 'B' Championship

DON'T FORGET!!

Na Gleannta U-21 have their first official game on Saturday 20^th February when they play Athenry in the first round of the North U-21 'B' Championship. The game will be played in Mountbellew at 3pm.


Please try to get along and support the lads in their first official competitive fixture.

Glenamaddy Intermediate Team - Diary date

Our Intermediate team will play Monivea/Abbey in the 1st round of the championship on the weekend of 22nd/23rd May.

Na Gleannta - first official fixture

Na Gleannta U-21 have their first official game on Saturday 20^th February when they play Athenry in the first round of the North U-21 'B' Championship. The game will be played in Mountbellew at 3pm. (Mountbellew GAA grounds are situated just outside Mountbellew town on the Tuam Road)

Best of luck to the players  and the management team of Paul Devlin, Stephen Neary, Sean Dowd and Aidan Geraghty. We would like to thank Trevor Dolan for his help and no doubt he sends his best wishes to all concerned.

Please come and support this panel of young players who have put in a huge effort preparing for this competition.

Defeat snatched from the jaws of victory!!

Na Gleannta U - 21s 0 - 8      Kilkerrin/Clonberne  2 - 4


After completing their first victory on Friday evening against Menlough, Na Gleannta opened in a much more confident vein. They steadily scored points during the first half and turned around leading by 6 unanswered points.  The second half however was a different story!

The second half saw the two teams matching each other in the early stages, but Kilkerrin/Clonberne were slowly building in confidence as Na Gleannta gradually seemed to lose their way a little. A few missed opportunities cost Na Gleannta dear as they were unable to convert possession and territory into points.  Kilkerrin/Clonberne were, however, slowly racking up their score and in the last 10 minutes or so were the dominant team eventually putting the ball in the net twice to emerge from the jaws of defeat by 2 points.

Not a bad weekend for the Na Gleannta lads again though.  Notching up their first win, and losing a game they were well on track to win after only playing together 4 times, shows a lot of promise for the future. 
    
 

Na Gleannta U-21s v. Menlough

Na Gleannta U-21s notched up their first victory by the narrowest of margins this evening at the Glenamaddy ground against Menlough.  In what was a real game of 2 halves Na Gleannta emerged victors by a single point after a spirited second half display.


Turning round trailing by 7 points Na Gleannta must have had an inspiring half time lecture from their coaches as they looked much the sharper side in what turned out to be a niggly second half.  As Na Gleannta turned the screw Menlough became increasingly frustrated at their inability to build on their first half superiority and Na Gleannta pressurised the Menlough goal for long periods

Lots of pressure here, on this occasion Na Gleannta failed to capitalise.










Increasingly the pressure told on Menlough as they continue to 'leak' points and eventually towards the end of the game  had a man sent off to bring their evening to an ignominious end.


Well done Na Gleannta on notching up your first victory.

   

Na Gleannta's next game is on Sunday 7th again at the Glenamaddy ground against Kilkerrin/Clonberne at 12 noon.

General Meeting - Monday 1st Feb

Following Monday's meeting - see posting dated 25th January - it was agreed

• that the cost of renting space for advertising hoardings would be €60 per year.  This is an amazing offer - try advertising in your local paper for a year and compare the cost!!
• Team managers for the forthcoming season were agreed - full list to follow .
• The Community Lottery; being a major source of income it was agreed to make a real push to sell more tickets than last year, and members now have available annual tickets for sale at €90 - this represents a substantial saving over buying a €2 weekly ticket. Please make an effort to contact a committee member to buy your tickets now. Also we are investigating ways of being able to buy tickets on-line.
• also discussed was the GAA's new Respect Campaign which has been piloted among under-12s in Armagh, Sligo, Waterford and Kilkenny, and will be extended nationally to under-12 level in the coming months. Over the next few years it will extend across the age ranges.
